Nasi Kandar Ayam Merah

After arriving at Ipoh, the first thing we went on the look out for was food. We were already starving at this time, and luckily, Suhaidy already had his eyes set on a long queue that had formed outside a local coffee shop.

Upon closer inspection, we saw that the coffee shop's increasing queue was due to the Nasi Kandar Ayam Merah that was available there. The interior of the coffee shop evoked a very traditional, olden-times vibes that resonated Malaysia's heritage.

We sat down at a table in the center of the coffee shop once we managed to surpass the queue, and the crowd inside was hectic - most of those who were seated were feasting on local fare of rice, a variety of curries, and proteins of their choice, while the rest were waving their arms in the air to get the busy servers to recognize them.

There were two separate attendants who came to take our order - one for the food and the other for the drinks. Two mouth-watering plates of Nasi Kandar (featuring squid and fried chicken respectively) eventually arrived at our table, and albeit the fact that the dishes looked like anything else you'd find in Kuala Lumpur, the seasoning of the chicken and the fleshy squid was something that brought a unique sensation to our palates.

Total price: RM15.70

The complete display of the nature of the locals at Yong Suan further enhanced our experience. We were able to see that there were many, many families as opposed to single, corporate individuals who came to eat here - mothers and fathers seated with their toddlers and babies at round tables, servers and attendants waving hello and goodbye to the toddlers and little ones as they entered and exited the coffee shop.

There was something very heartwarming and authentic about Yong Suan, and that is something that probably transcends the expertly prepared Nasi Kandar served there.
